As Tetris set the standard for puzzle video games, other puzzle games try to have names similar to it. A water-based puzzle game? Of course it has to be named Wetrix. Wetrix is all about keeping water from falling off your square “island”, raiding the environment to keep it contained.

Different “blocks” will fall down from the screen. Most of these are upwards arrows which will raise the land in that shape, along with water to fill up the enclosed areas you make. The goal is to keep as much water contained as possible, as if to much falls off the sides, you’ll get Game Over.

There are other kinds of “blocks” as well. Down arrows will reduce the level of the land, bombs will blow up holes in the island that you’ll need to repair (on that note, don’t try to launch a bomb down a hole, the game will punish you for it), ice to freeze water and fireballs to get rid of some water.

I can definitely see the appeal of Wetrix, but I really could not figure out how to do well at the game. There’s a bunch of different modes, including one where you can change settings to make the game even more difficult.

It’s not for me, but it’s a solidly made game.

the PC version of wetrix is really different compared to the n64 version, so i wanted to make a separate review for it. it lacks the ambient soundtrack of the n64, or any music at all for that matter, which kinda stinks. it also runs on a different engine, and the frames are a little chunky. that being said, the mouse control is fantastic for this game, and it does make me wish this version was as polished as the console versions... alas, a girl can dream. this version is also currently abandonware, and getting old PC games to work on modern computers can be a bit of a pain, but if you can get it working, its worth it in my opinion.

a really creative and extremely addicting puzzle game brought to you by the creators of plok, wetrix has SO many fun ideas that all add up to one of the most unique games ive ever played. it has a crazy high skill ceiling, and can keep you coming back for a long time.

the only thing holding this game back is its platform, the n64 controller isn't super great for a game that requires a ton of precision, and neither of your options (the dpad or the stick) are all that good. the game also doesnt run all that great once you start getting deeper into a run, which can make it hard to focus. there is also a PC version, but it might as well be an entirely different game, so i wont discuss that here.

i recommend wetrix to anyone wanting to play something entirely unique, there really isnt anything else like it. (unless you count QuaQua, but like... that game kinda reeks, so it might as well not count...)

probably the most fun i've had in a puzzle game in a while. the controls are kinda clunky and it's hard to be precise which can be somewhat frustrating, but other than that, it's a really sick game. challenging, addicting, and really satisfying.

It tried something new but failed to execute it somewhat well. It could be fun multiplayer if only it wasn't so confusing.

I still don't understand how this game works, but I've had a hell of a time with it!
