Wooden Sen'SeY is an okay game. It's an action platformer with bad action since the combat system is not the best. The combat is fun until you find out that the Axe-ground-slam-move just outclasses every other combat move. It not only does more damage but also has the most range. The only disadvantage of using it is that it makes you jump high in the air, but then again this could also be considered an advantage, because it makes you avoid enemy attacks.
The only combat move that isn't outclassed by it is the throwing star/the bomb move (I am putting these together because they are both power-ups that fit the niche of projectile). They most certainly aren't bad but the weird controller placement made me just want to avoid using them.
The controls over all are also weird.
Jumping is mapped to the B button while the axe is mapped to the X button. This is really uncomfortable in some instances where I had to platform and use the axe for either combat or the glorious Axe-ground-slam-move.
The game is best in the few instances where you have to platform with it's great swinging mechanics. Not only is the swing mapped to the R button but it also is very fun to build up a lot of momentum and just fly through the stages where it is the main mechanic.
But unfortunately most levels are plagued by either big empty hallways and/or inconsistent checkpoint placement. This happened enough time for me to point out as not only a nitpick but a genuinely low point for the game.
The worst part however were the submarine levels (I don't remember if there were one or two). The controls in these/this level/s were just abysmal and they took way too long to complete.
But as I already said the swinging mechanic were incredibly fun and the other platforming was okay. The soundtrack was also pretty good. The game sadly was very short and took me <4 hours to complete. The soundtrack is also pretty good and I would suggest giving it a listen.
The game overall is definitely not good, it has it's flaws but I also wouldn't call it bad, as I said it is okay but I don't know if it is worth it's full price of $10 especially when considering the other platformers on the Wii U. I would get it when it is on sale on steam or (if you are interested) at full price before the Wii U eshop closes down.
