Yarudora Series Vol. 1: Double Cast

released on Jun 25, 1998

The game begins with you, the main character, waking up at a fountain to the face of a pretty girl. You are a high school boy, and this girl has helped you out of the garbage where you had passed out in a drunken stupor. (Talk about first impressions!) As it turns out, she cannot remember anything about herself except for her name, Akasaka Mitsuki. Since she has no place to stay, you offer your own, and so begins your unusual relationship with this spirited girl. When your film club finds itself in need of a female lead, Mitsuki joins in, and from there the main story begins to unfold.

I'm not sure some of these good endings really fit into the category, but I guess it's all based on "how well things went after a girl found you hungover in a pile of trash."

More than a visual novel, Yarudora: Double Cast feels like an anime where you take the protagonist’s choices, since everything is fully animated (by Production I.G.) and voiced in a way that doesn’t really feel cheap. And we’re talking about a PS1 game with just 2 discs and it’s more impressive when you realize there are 26 endings. 4 good, 5 normal and 17 bad.

The story is simple, you are a dude without a face which one day finds a girl with amnesia and eventually you join a group of people recording a movie which supposedly, is cursed. Surprisingly, it was enjoyable to read and the mysteries surrounding everything kinda make you want to know the answers.

Of course I got one of the bad endings (even if the story itself kinda ended well) and I guess I can’t say I beated this game until I get one of the good endings. I’ll probably do it since as I said, the storyline is simple and it’s a short game (1 hour for the first playthrough).

I really look forward to other games in the series getting translated. But until then, Double Cast is a good option for anyone that’s curious like I was before knowing any of this information.
