in the past

Rift apart brings about as much as you expect from a main line game in the series. Controls are tight, responsive and feel oh so right. If you played the predesessors before, then you know how this game plays.

Right from the start the game doesn't banter around and pretty much gets right into the main story. If you're familiar with the series already, props to having a setting to just turn off tutorial pauses and hints altogether making it a seemless transition from the past games to this.

The game has multiple difficulties, all just changing how aggresive mobs are and how hearty they are to defeat. Harder modes will definately bleed your ammo dry. Everything is a bullet sponge. However, you'll likely die more from environment hazards than mobs, as it's too easy to just jump off the map by mistake. So don't be afraid to play on the harder difficulties. The curve isn't really that much harder.

The game is roughly 16 hours long, this includes optional content as well for collectibles and missions only. All PSN trophies might add another 2-5 hours of play. Although I wish there was more, this game does a great job at balancing what it offers before it becomes stale or "grindy".

In terms of performance, it's imaculate. The 30 fps full 4k mode is a treat. And give excellent theater-like fidelity. Perfect for those that want to play this game on the easiest mode, and are only in it for the story. This mode does have some visual artifacting (transparent textures having a strange blockyness to them) but it only ever shows up during cutscenes. The performance modes however are the best to play on and offer the least amount of visual artifacting, if any appear at all.

Now, the story could use some work. It's definately created some questions that I have for the franchise, and does feels like it builds up to a sequel for the next in line. However, I wouldn't call it great.

The "Alternate Universe" spin on this game is a rather fun concept. But it could've gone much farther than it did. Instead it just felt rather safe and predictable. Only keeping things at face value.

Another thing that lacked was the most interesting characters - that are brand new introductions mind you - don't really have a lot going for them. I absolutely love how they're designed, but they just exist with a shallow back story. It's a missed opportunity for some AU world building. Then again, that isn't something new for this franchise. Many of the previous games stories are also "safe and predictable." I'm not asking for a literary masterpiece, but I do want something that will at least make me feel invested in the the characters I like/hate.

Basically, this is a high quality game, with limited content. My only complaint really being "I wish there was more to it." For the 70 USD price tag, might be worth seeing this game drop in price before giving it a go.

Absolutely loved this game! GOTY contender for me. It took a while for exclusive games to release, but now that they're coming? They're coming in hot.

As well as being an absolute masterpiece visual marvel, it's an extremely solid Ratchet & Clank game. It brings quite a lot of new ideas to the table, while returning some of the better old ones. Some of the largest and longest planets, in some cases even requiring you to do return visits with new areas unlocked. Possibly the largest array of weapons yet, featuring a fair amount of new ideas like turning enemies into topiary art. Rivet was a great new character, and the whole mirror dimension thing in general provided some new, yet familiar lore and characters.

I was also super excited to see the return of customisable armour with bonus perks. And the best part is you get all the bonuses even if you don't equip that specific armour.

But it's definitely not the definitive R&C experience. Many things are still missing - the racing minigames have still been gone since the PSP game, the arena likewise feels pretty watered down compared to many past games, especially the PS2 ones.

While the levels in this one are massive, some of the bigger ones have problems with invisible walls, or platforms that should clearly be solid but you just fall through anyway, or certain platforms that you end up sliding off instead of landing on despite looking the same as other solid platforms etc. There's only really 2 planets that have that problem, but it's still noticeable (I did end up realising the reason was because I was trying to sequence break and explore a planet that you would later need a flying dinosaur to get to certain parts, so it feels like a very cheap way of doing that).

The bosses in the game are insanely forgettable. Other than the Nefarious battles, they're all basically just interchangeable robots.

There's very few new planets in the game, and I can say for at least one planet they straight up copy and pasted the layout from the previous game up until the final section. I can kinda understand given the whole alternate dimension thing, they might have wanted to showcase how the planets differed, but... they just kinda didn't? We've already had repeating planets in the past from the same dimension that felt different from before, since of course we never explore an ENTIRE planet, and this felt little more than what we've done there. Even some of the planets that are technically new feel like renamed versions of old planets (I thought for sure that underwater laboratory was the same one from Up your Arsenal)

I did like what they did with gold bolts, adding a new unlockable extra with each one collected, whether it be new skins for weapons, new effects for photo mode (which admittedly I never used), going right up to infinite health and ammo if you really wanted to use them. But for some reason, for a first in the series (maybe, I've missed a couple of games), they straight up removed skill points. That's a darn shame and could have really added some replayability.

While being one of the greatest visual experiences may be this games claim to fame, it doesn't detract from the fact it's still an amazing game. It just quite misses the mark on being what the first brand new Ratchet & Clank game should have been after the series longest hiatus ever imo.

Extremely fun game, has a good story and nice characters, overall an amazing childrens game and 3d platformer.

really fun! but I can't deny that I was a little disappointed in the visual aspect, given how much the game has been touted as a breathtaking showcase for the PS5's technical capabilities and even by some as "the best-looking video game ever made." and like... sure, there certainly is a LOT happening on screen at any given time. insane particle effects and fully rendered objects in the far distance and rapidly changing environments as the game throws you through dimensional rifts with no load times, it's all very technically impressive, especially at 60 FPS. but what this game DOESN'T have is a distinct visual identity beyond its generically glossy animation style, with bulbous big-eyed creatures and impossibly smooth textures and every color of the rainbow on screen at all times and in all places. a lot of people have compared this to pixar but to me it feels a bit more illumination entertainment—not a completely fair comparison given how much care was clearly put into this game compared to the slapdash cash-grab feel of "minions" or whatever. all I'm saying is that this game is very pretty and detailed from moment to moment, but I'm willing to bet that a few months from now, I won't remember most of those moments.

After the flop of 2016 I didn't have high hopes for this game but I'm glad I was proven wrong. While I don't think it lives up to the PS2 games I don't have any actual complaints with the game. The story is great, the guns are fun and interesting, and the dash and hoverboots makes platforming and shooting even more fast and action packed. Not to mention the gorgeous visuals and pretty much 0 visible loading, it really does show off the off the power of the PS5.

Hikaye

Not: Spoiler İçerebilir
Öncelikle Ratchet & Clank’in hikayesine dair hiçbir bilgiye sahip değilim.

Fantastic sequel to the 'reboot'

I've played a couple of other Ratchet games but none of them ever really hooked me to the point of wanting to beat them. Except for some reason this game did hook me. I couldn't even tell you why, it seems to still follow most of the formula from the other ones but maybe just more refined. I do really enjoy the loop of gathering bolts to buy stuff and using weapons to upgrade them, the weapon upgrades are really fun since they can end up doing crazy shit.

Wish I could say the exact reason this game resonated with me but at the end of the day at least I was able to enjoy it and beat it.

Ah man. What a game.

I’m not too familiar with the Ratchet and Clank franchise having only played through the 2016 movie game and watching my older sisters play it when I was younger but this was a lot of fun! Rivet and Kit are brilliant additions to the cast of characters and I really wanna see them have their own game.

Visually it’s stunning and it really shows of how powerful the PS5 is with its impressive load times and just how many wee guys they can fit on the screen at once.

The combat is great, each weapon feels different and makes for really interesting combinations for taking enemies down. Although i will say where the game is let down the most is it’s mini bosses. They are incredibly repetitive with like 4 different types of enemies in rotation for it, it gets kinda stale. The flying controls for the Trudi sections also kinda suck, it feels very clunky and like it was an afterthought.

Overall I had a really good time with this game! I think it’s a great title for the PS5 and its great to see Sony’s Class Wee Guys back in action.

Masterpiece game, but make the next one T rated. We need the edgy humor back.

One of my fav games of this year and an amazing platformer in general. Great animation on the characters, amazing character growth throughon the story and an amazing story all together. Great job Insomniac, keeping it firm that they are indeed the best studio working for PS Studios. 9/10

Made the 6-month hunt for a PS5 worth it. The highest amount of praise a human can give anyone really.

The most amazingly beautiful game I've ever played, really showcases the capabilities of the ps5 in the best way possible. I enjoyed every second of my whole playthrough, not one boring or frustrating moment, the difficulty and pacing was just about perfect. The only negative thing about this game, as I have seen just about everyone else say is the enemy variety, which does suck a little as there is only about 5 enemies you fight over and over again (or at least it feels that way), but in my opinion it isn't a huge thing and definitely doesn't detract from my experience much. One other small little nitpick is that the worlds don't feel quite as lived in or atmospheric as the worlds in the original trilogy did, but that might just be nostalgia speaking. Overall it's just about one of the best games I've ever played, visually stunning, fun gameplay, engaging story, fun and well-written dialogue and a great cast of characters. If you have a PS5 there is literally no reason not to play this, and I can recommend this to literally everyone.

This game is a complete blast! It's like playing through a Pixar movie. Each detail in the game is well-crafted, and the game doesn't feel like it drags at any point. Sony proves that they're continuously excellent at these focused single-player experiences.

The R&C series isnt written for the age group that played the originals, the focus is now on the next generation of children - who Insomniac have decided love nothing more than bland stuffed toys with no meaningful personalities of their own. The characters of Rift Apart are overly wholesome, throw out platitude after platitude, and never dare to add even a hint of an edge to their otherwise safe and round personalities. But I knew this would be the case. I accepted this and, even despite the constant unnecessary in-game dialogue, I was able to ignore it.

Where Rift Apart disappointed me, even in the context of modern day Ratchet, is the gameplay and level design. Forced cinematic moments flood your playthrough, and the exciting idea of teleporting into mini rifts feels no different to the swingshot but with less interaction. There are entire planets in this game where nothing happens to further the story, and the glarey, high-budget visual design does little to help the gameplay or story. Light and dark aren't used to add tone to levels, they exist because that's where light would reach based on wherever a light source was placed - it's technically excellent, but also just worse.

The gameplay is still true guns blazing Ratchet, I wasn't thrilled with any of the weapons individually compared to previous titles (I don't think any would earn themselves a place in my favourites from the series) but jumping around a shooting is always fun. The addition of a "dodge roll" with invincibility frames didn't feel very "Ratchet", but I won't complain about Insomniac trying out interesting mechanical ideas.

Rift Apart is a fun game, and on completion I immediately started a NewGame+, but the series does feel like its slipping further and further away from what works - and perhaps as a PS5 launch title there was a little too much tech demo and not quite enough great game.

Beautiful visuals with liquid smooth gameplay. Wish it wasn't so short though.

Very charming title with a good implementation of graphics and loading techniques. While i do not have any attachment to the franchise as this is my second game, I can see how some fans did not like it since it's more of a Rivet game.

Short and sweet with an easy platinum while maintaining a combat experience fun of diverse weapons as always, even when the enemy variety falls a little bit.

Amazingly fun and clever shooter. I love how they modernized the gameplay while keeping the goofy characters and dialogue. As a life long fan of the series, this one was a blast to play through.

really enjoyable time it caught me off guard that it came to pc lol
it's funny that a game that has so many top of the line and on the edge technology but feels so much like a ps3 game I say that in the most endearing way possible

This is gonna be a rant. Sorry fellas, I don't mean to undermine anybody else's experience with Rift Apart, as I truly wish I could enjoy it right alongside you, but I'm too hung up on my shit, and really gotta get it out of the system.

I really, really hate to say this, but this was painfully average. If I haven't played the previous Ratchet & Clanks, it'd just be plain average, but with the prior experience, my disappointment for this game is almost bitter, having to witness a cool concept receive this milquetoast of an execution.

I know, I know, "oh boy, here comes another PS2 Ratchet & Clank fan to preach a point they should've let go of 15 years ago," but I'm actually speaking from the point of someone who hasn't played all that much PS2 Ratchet & Clank, of someone who didn't have any means to play the Future trilogy or anything else, and perhaps most importantly, of this being the only game ported to PC, which made it my entry point after many years of not playing R&C. And I know sure as shit that Sony won't port the original trilogy, as I hold the theory that they're only porting games that "hold up to modern-gen standards" (which is why I firmly believe The Last Of Us got that pointless remaster), so, this is it. As much as I'd like to be proven wrong, this is probably all we're getting.

So, anyway. I'm not about to say they should've brought back Ratchet exactly as he behaved in the PS2 era. I mean, he was a right unlikable asshole in the first game, even I couldn't jive with it. It makes full sense for Ratchet to mature over the course of several games, but since when does maturing mean scrapping all semblance of irony and sarcasm? Of wit? Wouldn't you actually become more jaded and sarcastic the older you got?

What actually happened here, is that Ratchet & Clank de-matured. Rather than making the wise choice to go from an edgy teen audience to an encapsulation of young and old audiences alike, they instead went for basically nobody else but children. The writing on display here is so overbearingly obnoxious, with the best form of comedy they could come up with being screams, annoyingly overexaggerated voices, and zany robots that make your protags go "uhhhh that was weird." There was only one joke that landed (the Ratchet sneaking up on Nefarious bit), and everything else completely bounced off, if not made me roll my eyes.

And my god, it never stops. They. Never. Stop. Talking. This is actually a trend I've noticed with a couple recent Sony games (such as God of War: Ragnarok), this almost innate fear of not allowing there to be more than 5 seconds of silence. There's always gotta be a partner character, they always have to say something for everything you do, and let's say you're alone, well, we gotta have the character start talking to themselves of course, while making sure they point out to the audience how silly it is that they're talking to themselves. I consider "atmosphere through isolation" an extremely important element of a game like this, but I will never be able to hear my own thoughts if the characters are always going to project them for me.

You've created this fuckin' phonebook-sized script, but how much of it actually adds to the experience? Were any cuts ever made to this script, or was everything submitted on the first try as is? I'm gonna go with the latter, because the game has so little to say of any inherent meaning, it devolves into this repetitious Canadian-like apologyfest, characters constantly feeling sorry for themselves and for each other, always anxious, always expressing their worries and sorrows and all this wishy-washy bullshit that should've been saved for one or two major important moments of the story, rather than being the entire pull of the writing when it's not busting out its Grade-A sense of humor.

And I mean, we're talking about a franchise with all of these crazy fucking guns, blackhole miniguns, water spewers that turn enemies into topiaries, or a shotgun that pixelizes things. All these fun weapons, all this high-intensity action happening on-screen, just pure stupid fun, and meanwhile everybody in the story is feeling sorry for themselves?? What is this contrast??? The game is at odds with itself, latching on to the old DNA of Ratchet & Clank through its wacky and outlandish arsenal of weaponry, meanwhile the story is way too polite, way too nice, it doesn't reflect the tone of the gameplay at all. It's not the type of fun story that would fire a rocket launcher to blow up a robot's face, it's the type of story that would look at a rocket launcher and go "my parents died because of a rocket launcher... it was all my fault....."

So, yeah, did I get this across yet? This writing sucks. There's a time and a place for emotional storytelling, and this game's unsubtle and constant attempts at one totally clash with each other. Again, if this was your first Ratchet & Clank, I don't think you'd care that much, but seeing how this series started and seeing where it is now, I struggle to fathom how'd we end up here. There were definitely rough edges with the PS2 series, but this was the most patronizing, soulless way they could've possibly ironed them out. And I care about all of this, because I see the potential for Ratchet & Clank, and it always hurts to see a franchise actively reject its potential in favor of safety.

Alright, enough of that. What else? Hey, the gameplay's alright! Kinda. It's pretty mindless, actually, I mean, you really don't do much else in the combat other than strafe in one direction and jump over some enemy shots, there's little thought required. But damn, it does really feel good. Those guns of yours pack a serious punch, and upgrading them to Level 5 really brings out that oomph. Experimenting and finding the right series of weapons for you is encouraged, and serves as some pretty decent popcorn gameplay. It does, unfortunately, get pretty stale after the first couple hours when they start reusing mini-bosses, and the enemy variety just. Runs out. At that point, I started caring less.

More than the combat, I really enjoyed the movement, especially once you get those jet-shoes that allow you to blast off at high speeds. I've found a couple spots during gameplay where I could make some jumps that the devs probably did not intend me to do. Some of them led into invisible walls, but others were rewarding enough as actual shortcuts towards hidden collectibles. It's a pretty broken ability, but I wouldn't have it any other way.

This game has some real pretty graphics, and the gameplay has been refined quite nicely. I wouldn't know if this is the best that Ratchet has ever controlled, but I can't imagine it getting any better than this. Coming back to my rant briefly, it's just... a shame that all of these systems were wasted on a setting I couldn't care less about, and writing that bordered on sensory overload, and led me to turning down the speech volume to 0, something I've never done before.

To imagine a Ratchet & Clank game that plays like this, but under a passionate team that have full creative control to do what they want, rather than what feels the most "safe" to do, would be a dream. But, perhaps I should fuck off instead, and join the rank of R&C fans who have accepted long ago that this is just what the franchise is now. I've made my rant. I've calmed down. It's time to move on with my life.

Fun and entertaining at first but it quickly becomes boring because its basically the same couple levels being repeated over and over again. Worth a play for the experience but this is definitely one of the "turn your brain off and play for a couple hours" kind of games. The combat is fun and the story and characters are just okay, the arena was my favorite part of the game. The animations and graphics are pretty awesome, definitely a very colorful, snappy game but lacks diversity in combat and levels.

Finally, a true next-generation videogame experience.
After that disappointing "Remake" of 2016 I was honestly worried about the future of the series, I mean, I was excited for this game but I couldn't help but be sceptical about it.

Having played the game now I'm actually happy with how it turned out to be, the humor is decent, some jokes do land well even thought there are still many of them that are... childish, the gameplay is actually very enjoyable, the movement is improved from the previous games with some cool additional mechanics that make it very smooth and fun to play, and the characters are actually likeable!

There's way more exploration this time around, every planet has some secrets to find, and even pieces of gear to unlock which you can wear to change the way the character looks. There are also minigames as well which I tried out but they're just okay, nothing special.

Although the main story is not really memorable, it's just another adventure where you have to save the world, I did like how the rifts played a role in it, and the mechanic of how you can traverse the rifts is impressive, the way all various worlds load instantly and they also look gorgeous really shows the high quality of the game, and the effort that was put into making it.

The puzzles are alright but damn they really slow down the pacing, and there are actually many of them, not too many but more than enough.

And even with all the improvements on the movement, the additional quality of life mechanics and the brand new protagonist, at the end of the day it's still a Ratchet & Clank game and it plays very similarly to the previous games, the shooting doesn't feel fresh, and I honestly think this could've been fixed if Rivet had different weapons and play-style, it would make the game less repetitive and more rewarding.

This game is honestly a blast, it's not anything new but it does feel like a next-generation game in many ways, the haptic feedback and adaptive triggers enhance the gameplay, and the instant teleportation helps with the fast paced action and beautiful cinematic set-pieces.

It might be quite short but it's still very much worth trying out, it's just a fun little adventure, and most importantly, as of right now it's one of the very few games that actually showcases the technology of the PlayStation 5.

Final Rating: "Great" ~ 8/10.
