Some excellent gameplay bugged down by some lacking visuals and, quite honestly, awful writing. Except they decided to make it pretty good at the end for some reason? Perhaps it's just because it was something interesting followed by some awfulness, but the ending is pretty great (save for the Ed Sheeran of course).
Also, Tinkaton. That's all I have to say.

I think that, for most Pokémon fans, you'd be able to overlook all of the technical issues in this game and be able to thoroughly enjoy one of the best Pokémon games in recent memory, however, I am learning about myself that maybe I'm not 'most Pokémon fans', maybe I'm not 'Pokémon fans' at all, maybe the novelty has worn out on me and maybe I can't be arsed with the monotony of the turn based combat and the copium of trying to convince myself that it's absolutely fine for a triple A game to release in an abhorrent buggy state such as this... Sort it out, Game Freak... Palworld is coming for yo ass
How can I be as obsessed as I am with such a broken game?? It looks bad quite often, but the art style underneath it all is gorgeous. The new Pokémon are fun. The game feels like it’s often fighting against you having a good time, but I’m having a good time?? Story is working for me, the multiple story paths is working for me, I just feel it needed another year in the oven and would’ve been perfect. But as it is? Idk!! The ending even gives Xenoblade vibes. The amount I’m playing it can’t let it be below 8/10
Does it have a bit of jank? Yeah, definitely. But it's not as big of an impact on the experience as people make it out to be, and boy what an experience this game gives you. If nostalgia was easier to break through, this could've easily been my favorite gen. I know a lot of people hard disagree, but this game just reaffirmed to me that Game Freak still has it in 'em.
I've really hit a burnout point with Pokemon. After Legends did everything so right in adapting Pokemon to open world, Violet walked all that back into a messier, less interesting package, Everything people said about Sword and Shield is actually true with this one, an ugly mess only slightly redeemed by a great final act.

I honestly can't say why I like this game in comparison to other pokemon games. The open world gameplay is arguably a lot worse than Legends Arceus', but I still found myself enjoying this game. The open ended exploration was pretty fun and pokemon is just inherently suited for an open world. The formula needs severe tweaking though, gyms being fixed level makes zero sense for a game where you can do gyms in any order, the catching should take more elements from legends arceus, and I also miss the actual gameplay challenge of pokemon being dangerous from Legends.
