Harry Potter on the Game Boy has strengths and weaknesses.

I played this many years ago, just a little though, but I remember liking it (despite not being a big Harry Potter fan). I had to do some research to trace which game it was, as there’s an abundance of games based on Harry Potter. Then I had it in my collection for many years before finally picking it up this summer.

I do like the game’s open-world setting, and that there were varied types of tasks and a bigger plot to follow. I suppose it follows the book and the movie plot quite a bit. There’s a level of detail that gives the characters and the universe some depth.

The cons are that the battles do get a bit redundant sometimes. Like with all RPGs, I am never sure how much I’m supposed to grind and level up. I got a bit tired of that part. The card combination part (and card collecting) of the game wasn’t well implemented either. I didn’t find much use for it when I already had spells and items. Hogwarts having eight floors with tons of rooms and areas (plus a cellar and a large area outside the school) also felt a bit overwhelming and disorienting early in the game. I suspect some people might give up here as it’s a bit much looking for stuff in such a massive area.

If you keep at it, then all in all it’s an alright RPG for Game Boy. Unfortunately, the game soft-locked on me right before the final part of the game. I didn’t bother playing through the whole game again, so I just watched a let's play of the last part on YouTube. (I was so over-leveled that part would have been quite easy, I suspect.)
