Of all the games in 2019, this one was easily my most hyped. And at the time it definitely held up. Unfortunately as time passed and hype died down so did the quality of the game. In its prime this game was something amazing but the overall lack of players has kind of drowned out any reason to continue using the game for its primary purpose.

The online area is quite extensive. There’s no easy way to share levels but of course there have been so many levels uploaded over the past few years that you will literally never run out of game. And the course world seems to have had a moderation system added so that a lot of the garbage levels get removed so for the most part you will be playing at least decent levels. And some of the levels that are made with care are genuinely some of the greatest and most creative levels I’ve ever seen in a video game.

Nintendo also added a couple multiplayer modes which when they work are pretty fun. Key phrase being “when it worked” because quite infamously it doesn’t. In most runs when you're in the early ranks you will almost always have that one little Timmy with potato wifi ruining the game for everyone because Nintendo never made actual servers for players to use. And when the game is lagging it is HORRID. The slow down is actually unplayable. I have noticed that the further up the ranks you go, the less this issue is present but its never fully gone and it shouldn’t have been a problem to begin with, especially because only a few months prior to release, Nintendo just launched the paid online service. It wasn’t there at launch but are able to play with friends and its a ton of fun then.

The game also includes a full story mode. The story is just a setup to give you little tasks in the form of levels created by the devs. The story doesn’t serve as an actual game though, that would be stupid, however it instead serves as a tutorial to show you how to use all the many objects in the creator mode and the way some things interact. It’s purely to inspire the player to take what they see here and utilize it in making their own levels. It’s actually a really smart idea. None of the levels are super crazy or long. They are simply trying to show off the many ways you can utilize the elements the game has on offer for you.

The actual builder mode is the soul of the game. The game doesn’t really work when you’re playing docked but on handheld, its really fun and intuitive to use. Every object will interact with all other objects in a unique way and the players with imagination and patience to make something truly fun will thrive here. It’s admittedly sort of a novelty since most adults don’t have the time to develop a full game, go figure, but a child still filled with passion and creativity will get a ton from it. In a future update they also added the Super Worlds which I think is a feature that every single person who played even from the first game was hoping for and they put a ton of work into it as well. There is a ton of depth to every single aspect of the creator sie of the game and it’s beautiful to see the amazing things people have made.

Sadly there comes a very obvious problem with the game and that is the game being kind of dead. People are still playing the game in the form of Endless Mario runs but there aren’t many people still taking the time to make levels, or at least nowhere near the extent that it was when the game released.

As a sequel it operates really well. A lot of the additions are things that I’m genuinely upset weren’t there in the original. Namely the slopes and World Maker. There are also a ton of out-of-left-field additions that add a ton to the game like the Master Sword which turn you into Zelda1 Link with an entire new moveset and the Superball Flower that gives the game a Super Mario Land style as well as letting the player spit superballs that bounce just like in SML. My favorite addition is the Mario 3D World game style. Alot of the elements here don’t really translate to the other styles so its kept as kind of its own thing but it genuinely plays as if its 2D 3D World. It comes at sort of a cost, though. Its nothing big but there was a sort of weirdness to the original that was lost here. Its not a big loss and I could care less if these things were hear or not but removals like the amiibo mushroom are a little sad.

Overall, this game was amazing… when it released however the lack of a dedicated player base has made this game lose a lot of the enjoyment. All of the features are still there and are really fun to use and build with however don’t expect anyone to really see or even play most levels you create. As someone just in it simply to play an infinite amount of Mario levels then you have no better option than this game. It is amazing.

Really, it's dead? How did that happen so quickly? I feel like even Mario Maker 1 lasted a good while before they closed the servers for good.

@RedBackLoggd dead might not have been the right term for it. But like I hardly see anyone talking about it anymore.
But you state in the review that the creation of levels has been massively declining?
