DOOM's legacy proceeds it so much that meaningful critique so much later after the fact is kind of redundant. I do now see, though, how DOOM has been able to keep such a shine for so long. The engine actually gives a lot to the player, and gives the player both a lot of breathing room and a lot of forgiveness. It's the levels themselves that are hard. This lets DOOM designers push players harder than normal, as they can trust the engine to be able to "catch" the player should their levels just a bit too hard.
