I think this might actually just be the best 2D platformer ever made. It's highly addictive and challenging both as a 1 player and a co-op adventure. The mechanics and level design are top notch and you can definitely tell that this game was made by people with a deep love and appreciation for the classic DKC series, but also the know how to build on them and take that formula to the next level. Boss fights are also pretty memorable, I'm actually a bit surprised by how hard the final one bodied me even on my second playthrough.

But maybe you're more of a casual platformer fan. Maybe you prefer a breezier experience. That's okay, the Switch port lets you play as Funky Kong, and he is awesome. Funky is basically a super kong who does everything the other four do well and then some. He's literally too cool to die. Tropical Freeze is a tough but fair (and fun) game, but if you don't wanna stress over it, Funky's your main man.

And all of this greatness is wrapped up in a fantastic aesthetic package. Characters are expressive and fun. The soundtrack? It's David Wise, you already know. And despite what the cover and theming might imply, the environments are full of variety, you're not just running across slippery ice levels the whole game. But when you finally approach the Snowmads turf and brave through that harsh blizzard with that triumphant music blasting in the background like the kongs are going to war? Bro nothing hits like it.

I hope Metroid fans finally get to play Prime 4 someday, but once that's out I pray that Retro get their hands back on DKC, because I'd love to see them somehow improve upon this masterpiece and bring back the kremlings for a runback. Even if the snowmads are pretty quality in their own right, I think every DKC fan wants to square up with the king again.
