While not the first monster hunter game I've played, it is the first one I've played through to completion. And man what a fun game it was! Beautiful environments, great variety of weapon types that all have their own unique play style, and many challenging monsters with their own armour sets to mix and match. There's a lot of depth in this game, and if you have the time to sit down and learn it, you'll most certainly have a blast. I wish the Handler didn't exist though, one of the worst characters I've ever had the misfortune of dealing with.
