There's obviously a very earnest attempt at introspection and exploring emotional growth through a generational lens in this script, but the execution lands somewhere between hokey and flat, despite two lead performances trying to give the material as much as they can.

I love Keri Russell almost universally but here it's either unfamiliarity with the medium or maybe a lack of depth in the characterization but you can almost feel her reaching for a tone that the director never quite settles on. Kaitlyn Dever is similarly playing a bit too large and a bit too purile, despite her character being of a similar age to hers in Booksmart, which feels much better realized. (But I am excited to see her as Abby in S2 of The Last of Us tv series.)

I'm also not a huge fan of the visual aesthetic; instead of photorealistic 3D environments as the backdrop for what look like hand-drawn 2D characters (whose mouths don't move when they speak, which is also an odd choice) I think a more heightened 3D space like cel-shading or something would have been less jarring, but what do I know, making games is hard.
