Metroid back in the day was something else entirely. It was mysterious, the world felt huge, and finding all the power-ups gave this awesome sense of progression. That ending reveal blew my mind, too! Sure, the graphics are dated now, but the core gameplay holds up remarkably well if you're into that old-school challenge and exploration.

Hell yeah. Using a guide completely kills the point of the game. Too few games now challenge the player. Finding all the side passages in Metroid felt like pulling apart a big puzzle box.

I just played it for the first time, and it totally holds up today.

@QuiB - Totally agree! That sense of exploration and discovery is what makes Metroid so special. The way it gradually reveals its secrets, letting you piece things together without hand-holding, is a lost art in many modern games. It's awesome to hear that it still holds up - such a classic for a reason! Any parts that surprised you as a first-time player?

Many things. I was particularly surprised how long it took me to even find any bosses. The map design is so unusual by modern standards, and I love it. Really makes this feel like a hostile alien world to conquer, instead of some sort of passive amusement park ride, like most modern games do.
