HyperCard Tasting Menu

A small selection of HyperCard games for the Apple II and Apple Macintosh lines of personal computers. These games can be found on Macintosh Repository, and Macintosh Garden. Most will work fine in the emulator of your choosing (I recommend SheepShaver or Mini vMac).

HyperCard was one of the first successful hypermedia systems prior to the advent of the World Wide Web. Authoured by Bill Atkinson, HyperCard was based on the concept of a stack of cards, similar to a Rolodex, with those cards containing interactive objects. Its ease of use both for users and developers saw it explode in popularity, with Steve Wozniak calling it 'the best program ever written.' Most HyperCard games were in the style of choose your own adventure-type experiences and point-and-click games. There remains an active subset of people still making HyperCard games to this day, with examples seen on itch.io.

Many HyperCard titles are not on IGDB yet, and are poorly documented online. As the software was better suited to non-games interactive media, those sorts of titles may make for a better representation of HyperCard's capabilities. I personally recommend Electronic Whole Earth Catalog, Time Table of History, and much of The Voyager Company's interactive book catalogue, particularly their version of Art Spiegelman's Maus.
