Sonic Frontiers was a game I approached with cautious optimism. Sonic as a series means more to me than any other so each game is almost an event. So When I played frontiers and I liked it I was overjoyed. The openzone gameplay clicked instantly and I understood what sonic team saw in the concept. The cyberspace levels where great fun if a bit short, but I plan to replay them through arcade mode going forward. Can't say I was fond on the repetition of green hill, chemical plant and sky sanctuary tho. I also really enjoyed the story as the characters were portrayed better than they have been in decades with new character Sage adding layers to one of my favourite characters I didn't know I needed. The combat in frontiers also surprised me as at times I got the same dopamine hit I got from performing sexy combos in devil may cry. The guardian fights are varied and enjoyable, while the boss fights tickle my anime loving brain in all the right places. The soundtrack is also really good with some standout tracks but I would be lying if I said it stood up with the stellar sonic soundtracks of the past The open zone gameplay while fun becomes a little repetitive when closing in on the conclusion as what you do doesn't change to much from beginning to end. The games use of minigames that don't really fit and are not particularly fun is unfortunate. What is also unfortunate is that certain part of the map are locked behind story progress hindering your freedom and in one case blatant use of invisible walls stopping you from getting across a gap so you can do a minigame was very frustrating. The grind to max out sonic was a little tedious, but overall I really enjoyed my time with frontiers, as while defiantly flawed there is a lot of good here that can be built upon to make greater games in the future. I'm also looking forward to playing as characters other than sonic in 3D for the first time in a long time through free updates. It's not for everyone but it is for me.
