A good foundation for a football-based RPG.

With plenty of characters to recruit and abilities to master, Inazuma Eleven attempts to create a unique fusion of two tried and tested genres: football and RPG.

Inazuma Eleven, developed by level-5, launches you into the game as a goalkeeper, struggling to maintain and motivate a full squad of players. As the story develops you encounter a variety of interesting and unique recurring characters, strengthening the players bonds while building an emotional connection with the character's histories and motives.

At its core, Inazuma Eleven is an RPG. "Battles" are provided as football matches, where player stats matter less than player abilities. You will unlock more as the game progresses, but so will the enemies. There are many strategies the game will try to push you to use, but it is pretty straight forward to find the most efficient ways of scoring goals and ultimately playing the game. Where the game is initially an easy dash through the first 7 or 8 chapters, the difficulty ramps up towards the end and grinding for levels becomes a necessity to progress.

As for the game variance, there is not much to do other than level up, complete friendly matches, recruit new players and run through the story. There is little to no side content, and you will likely not want to play the post-game final match as it requires an immense amount of levelling.

Inazuma Eleven is a great game to study as it tries to take the best parts of two extremely popular genres. Although it is not perfect, there was clearly inspiration for improvement as delivered in its future sequels.
