I love the other Classic Castlevania games. I think this is the last vintage-vania I haven’t played besides the often forgotten Legends for Gameboy. Because of this I had high expectations for what was touted as the greatest old school Castlevania game.

That being said I didn’t have too much fun playing this game. I think it comes down to the level design, which feels too focused on tough enemies. In Rondo I feel like every enemy takes too many hits. I prefer the approach of them being obstacles in conjunction with the platforming.

Some have said that Rondo is almost like a fighting game, but I am not a fighting games gamer ): I was hoping for more tight platforming.

On top of that general criticism I’m not huge into the shift towards anime aesthetic. It looks cool in the cutscenes, but the stage backgrounds feel somewhat empty. With boring color blocking in comparison to the other classic titles.

Maybe I’m just bitter but I feel like this game’s reception has been boosted by its lack of availability in America. Sort of like how people always used to say Sonic CD was the best classic Sonic game. I dunno man ):
