Like the PS2 NBA Live games, the gameplay in the March Madness is a bit too arcade-like and shallow to sustain playing multiple seasons worth of games. This game did introduce play-calling to to the series, which is one advantage it has over its NBA sibling.
The atmosphere and presentation is also good for the time. I'm not a fan of the recruiting system in 2K's College Hoops games, and while I slightly prefer March Madness's recruiting, it's not particularly engaging either.
Now that college basketball games no longer exist, March Madness 2005 is a fun capstone to look back on, but it's not a forgotten classic.
