I had always wanted to try out the original Super Mario RPG, but it never seemed to be particularly accessible. I was very happy to hear that it was getting a remake. The art style was pretty much perfectly adapted in this modern style, leading to both the characters and the world looking very pretty visually. The updated music is great too, and it's nice to have the option to switch back to the original music tracks as well. The battle system is simple but fun. It's obviously similar to the Mario and Luigi and Paper Mario games due to the inclusion of action commands. But in Mario RPG, the action commands are a bit trickier to pull off, both while attacking and defending. I really did enjoy my time with the game, but there were a few negatives in the package. Strangely enough, I felt that there were some pretty noticeable frame drops here and there, which I definitely wasn't expecting. I also felt like none of the minigames controlled particularly well, which was upsetting to me because they could have been way more fun than they ended up being. As far as postgame content goes, the secret boss and the rematch fight against it were both really fun, the rematches against other bosses were not fun at all for me. Some of them were better than others, but most of them felt too gimmicky. They were more frustrating than they were fun, kind of like they were only challenging because they were annoying to get through. I might also just be bad at the game though. Overall, a fun time with a few bumps in the road here and there.
