Much better with the mOTHER+99 romhack. Smooths over the samey looking areas with the map and the health grind by spawning you with full health. Otherwise it's more of a 5 or 6/10. Either way the game will start out a bit frustrating, but it really gets better once you get your hands on the better powerups.
