One of the better Dragon Quests. My score is 4/5 even if it's really more of a 4.5/5 kind of game, more out of its relationship to other Dragon Quest games.
Dragon Quest VIII, both at time of writing and for me personally when I first played it front to back to completion, is diminished, however mildly, by something unfairly outside of its control--it exists in the same world as Dragon Quest XI, a game that, retroactively, it now feels more like the blueprint of, rather than something that can just exist on its own.
Still, it's a great game... just, in the context of the present its hard not to want more out of it. It's a lot like VI, where it's great, but it kind of overstays its welcome, and doesn't maintain its narrative focus for its long run time. I really can't put my finger on why this is, it's just how I feel.
