Playing this title properly for the first time in 2024. When the game came out I only played it once or twice in a friend’s house.
I think this is an amazing sequel to God of War (2005). When you have a solid game, I don’t think that it’s necessary that you re-invent it with each new entry. And I think that God of War II understood that perfectly. It takes the base from the first game, adds cool new thing and improves almost every aspect of it. The set pieces are amazing. I like those moments when the camera just pan out and you see a tiny Kratos running around and you can almost feel how gigantic those places are.
At the same time, the things that I didn’t like about the first game, are still here. For me, some of the combat gets repetitive and even frustrating with certain enemies. I think there were a bit too many enemy waves in some areas. I understand that’s one of the main aspects of this game: going from section to section, clear enemies to move forward and so on. But I think that less combat and smaller waves of enemies would have made the story of the game more fluid. I mean, the overall story of the game is amazing, but the way you go through it, the way you experience the story could have been better for me. Speaking of the story, that ending is amazing. I can’t imagine what would’ve been like to play this game when it came out and experiencing that cliffhanger, not knowing what would happen next.
