Ape Escape is filled with variety and it highlights this variety by having the right analog stick act as the primary form of interaction instead of using the face buttons.

Due to camera controls not yet being standardized as something that should always be on the right stick, the right stick is freed up to be used in a plethora of novel ways when interacting with your equipment. cCatching the monkeys rules as well . . .Their AI is way more interesting than it has any right to be and is enough to make the game stand out from other platformers and collectathons

At times the game feels spotty in its ramping up of difficulty. The more challenging levels toward the end of the game are a welcome addition, yet I can't help but feel they're not built up to in a smoother way, resulting in the last third of the game giving a completely different vibe.
