Look. Yes the combat SUCKS. It sucks A LOT but my lord the world and story is just so masterfully crafted. its a simple story told in a very complex way that will keep you guessing and wanting to find out more and more and more. I was floored throughout the whole experience and the terrible combat wasn't bad enough to ruin the story that was being told to me.
Masterpiece and it sucks so much controversy surrounded this game because I truly feel this is a story most people should experience if you can by pass the combat parts of the game.

Rule of rose is still a masterpiece despite its combat but at the end of the day opinions are opinions
Hell you can even say this about silent hill 2 lol. The gameplay of Silent hill 2 is not great by any means but why is it still regarded as a masterpiece? because everything else surrounding that game is masterfully crafted.

@Kirokito Visual novels aren't games there are exceptions. Rule of rose has worse gameplay then silent hill 2 for sure. And silent 2 is still fun to play imo. Rule of rose is not. Despite its really good narrative.
@Xenosaga yes but visual novels are apart of the medium and can be argued are still considered video games even though most don't have gameplay. It still has a structure and most have branching paths with ways to interact with characters along the story.
And exactly you said the magic phrase "fun for me" because rule of rose was still fun for me despite the flaws. No arguing against SH2 because I very much agree with you on the basis the game is more fun to play but like again everyone has different feelings and affects towards how they handle it. When a game is as well crafted like rule of rose I can bypass the horrible combat and still somehow make it fun because everything else surrounding rule of rose is near perfection for me allowing me to forgive its faults. Another prime example is deadly premonition, the gameplay is HORRIBLE but why is it well loved? because everything surrounding that game oozes charm and love

It didn't make sense to me because its very well a video game but can't be amazing because of one component? which is why it gets tricky to talk or argue about because people view this stuff differently on so many levels like how you don't consider VNs games
