played Sonic Forever port
So I got nothing better to do, so I'm deciding to just on/off with going through the series minus most spinoffs. Played this quite a bit on Mega Collection Plus and Sonic Gens Coll too so have nostalgia for it as well. Played this twice, first time Sonic and Tails and then second with Knuckles. Had a fine time both ways.
For stuff I liked, it's a good first game and I can see why it was successful. Fun to try and go as fast as you can, music is great, and boss fights while simple are fun. Since the one I played used the Whitehead ver. going Super Sonic was a ride esp. through stages like Green Hill Zone or Star Light Zone, and playing as Knuckles for my second time around was enjoyable as well, his glide made for quite some easier moments than as Sonic.
For stuff I didn't like, Special Stages are an eyesore, never cared for Sonic 1's special stages outside the music. Marble and Labyrinth Zone are bores, Labyrinth moreso. I can stand Marble Zone but god I get bored going through Labyrinth, it's not even that's it's hard for me or anything as long as I don't try to rush through it, it's just so fucking boring. And the fact they bring it back for a fourth time in Scrap Brain like come on. Plus the three acts make some stages overstay their welcome.
Either way I had a good time going through it again, has some issues since it's the first game in the series but overall a fun time.
If I ranked the stages,
1. Green Hill Zone - A great intro stage that leaves an impression, can make good speed, love breezing through it

2. Star Light Zone - Fun stage to breeze through as well, not too hard on the difficulty and has a fun boss fight.

3. Spring Yard Zone - Good on the speed as well, creative deisgn for the stage, tho I don't care for the rising platform portions.

4. Scrap Brain Zone (+Final) - Fun final stage, nice and challenging with a fun boss fight as well. Would be higher had it not been for the revisit to Labyrinth.

5. Marble Zone - I like the music and aesthetic, it's just too much a slog for me. Like the boss fight though.

6. Labyrinth Zone - Boring underwater trudge, even worse if going for chaos emeralds. How the hell did this get FOUR stages.
