Sonic Marathon List

played on Retroarch

Continuing on with my Sonic marathon, I checked out this one before I went to the main sequel on the Genesis/MD. Played through once, got all Emeralds and the good ending. I did not have a good time with this one to be honest.

For a quick stuff of things I liked, music was fine though with the exception of the ending track and a few stages, they didn't really stand out to me. Also the graphics were nice as well.

That's really all I can say, as a game I went in wanting to like it. Even though I found Sonic 1 8bit pretty average, it was still a fine game, I didn't regret my time with it. However when it came to this one, I had just wanted it to end already cause I was getting tired of it. A sequel should improve on problems the first entry may of had and deliver a better experience, but with Sonic 2 8bit I felt that instead the experience was worse overall.

My main problem honestly came from the stages and gimmicks. Even from the start the camera can be a bit wonky at times and not show you that a pit of spikes lies under you (which I heard this camera problem is actually worse in the GG ver). The stages themselves aren't really anything interesting and are pretty much designed around a gimmick of the stage. The gimmicks bring this game down so hard since they're either poorly implemented or nothing special. The mine cart is whatever, the Hang Glider was a pain in the ass to deal with and the tubes just got annoying to the point I looked up a map just to go on the right path and stop plopping in the same area 5+ times, and the bubble was just a slow drag I hated having to slowly go through and do, esp. when the sections got longer. When the stage wasn't hard focusing on it's gimmick it still was just nothing that stood out about them to me.

The Emeralds were also a pain to get, what wasn't too hard to search for in the first one, here they're in such asinine places I ended up looking up where they were so I could grab them. Sky High Zone's being the worst of them. Also, the fact that we're still doing the no hit runs for the bosses is annoying esp cause of how some of these bosses' patterns are.

All in all, I didn't have a good time with this one. I just wanted it to end as I played and seeing it finally be finished was a relief. If I ever played again, it would be with the fan SMS remake but I don't see myself playing this again for a longgg time.

To rank the stage,
1. Under Ground Zone - An easy starter stage with a gimmick that isn't annoying. The visuals are nice and it's not a bad stage to go through, but getting the chaos emerald is a pain since you have to make the jump just right to get it. Boss is meh, though I heard horror stories on the GG version.
-
2. Green Hills Zone - A slightly above average stage that would've been #1 had it not been for Act 3 where you need to leap of faith from spring to spring and hope you don't land on spikes and have to restart the stage.
-
3. Gimmick Mountain Zone - A mediocre stage. The gimmick is whatever, the part of the stage where if you mess up the floating platform's pattern you get no hint as you're left to die and start the stage over is annoying. Not much else to say. Forgettable boss.
-
4. Crystal Egg Zone - Another mediocre one, not much happens here at all to be honest. The final boss is ass with it's patterns and just in general being a slog.
-
5. Aqua Lake Zone - The first stage is mediocre, but the 2nd stage is a slow slog as you have to find bubbles to float up in and not let them pop. I was just bored again and yet another stage with a forgettable boss. Haven't had a Sonic game yet show me a fun water level.
-
6. Scrambled Egg Zone - I did not like this stage at all, the tubes were a royal pain the ass, especially when they'd drop you onto a bed of spikes. Boss is whatever, but again this stage was just a pain in the ass, esp with trying to find the right tube to use or repeat the same section endlessly. Also fuck those goddamn red bomb enemies, I hate them so much.
-
7. Sky High Zone - Hands down the worst stage in my opinion all because of the hang glider. I know how to control it but even then it's still ass and the game forces you in several situations to use it. It's worse in Act 2 since it requires you to use it for the majority of the stage. Which on that mention it was hard to tell which cloud I could and couldn't stand on. Plus the Chaos Emerald's location was extremely stupid.
