(This is the English translation of my Spanish review of this game)

I know I'm committing sacrilege by giving such a low rating to a game that is so beloved, but damn - it’s really complicated to love something that is so clunky and so boring.

I remember playing Nier Automata and thinking it was a masterpiece. Fluid movement, entertaining gameplay, and an interesting story. I thought this remake would bring me more of the same, but I couldn’t get down with the endless mountain of plain white rice it served me. Literally an endless sidequest simulator. I know most of the reviews I saw before playing it said you need to have a bit of patience because it eventually picks up - and despite this, I couldn’t handle the grind. I couldn’t love the dry dialogues, the protagonist's attitude, the stiff menus, everything about the game put me off. It didn’t pick up even after 11 hours.

It’s difficult because I understand where this type of storytelling comes from, but I refuse to suffer through more than 11 hours for a good story later. All the secondary systems of the game are serviceable at best - not even the fishing works well. It feels like this is a game that operates on a system of cortisol rather than a system of dopamine. I had to abandon the game when I entered the Barren Temple because there was a section where you can’t shoot, jump, or run, and somehow you have to dodge 5 turrets that continuously shoot across the room. A disaster of a “challenge” designed 100% to frustrate. What an annoying game.

tl;dr, 2 cancer-ridden sisters out of 5 👯
