I am not the biggest platformer fan, or nintendo fan for that matter. But I can recognize that a vast majority of their games have considerable quality and care put into them. This is not one of them. In fact, It might be one of the worst modern nintendo games I've played outside of like, the demo for Arms.
This game is completely uninspired, as basically everyone else has already mentioned its just "New" Super Mario Bros again, released with slightly different reskins of the same ideas. At the very least it wasnt super easy and some of the later levels can be a real pain, but at that point the damage had already been done and I just was begging it to be over. Compared to New Super Mario Bros 2 where I actually went out of my way to complete all the worlds, I actively looked out for all the skips in this game I could find to make sure I had to play as little of it as possible. Also, the music is just really boring. I wish they would of actually tried instead of kept basically the same songs this whole series. They also use a lot of the ghost mansion levels and precisely 0 of those are fun.
The game isnt completely terrible though, I think being able to play as Toadette is pretty cool and Nabbit + Super Guide Luigi are good for those struggling. I think that kind of accessibility is pretty great. And for the first world or so I was actually having a really fun time with this one, there was just enough fresh with it to keep me having a good time. But that joy quickly faded, and I realized I really was just playing the same game yet again. It's lazy, its joyless, and its the worst game I've beaten this year so far.
