The story of Vanquish is set in a distant future where the world's natural resources are dwindling and the two main world powers are fighting over what precious little is left. As part of this bizarre energy race, the United States builds an advanced space station, a city in the sky capable of harvesting solar energy. However, Russian spies manage to hijack the station and turn the harvested solar energy into a powerful weapon that completely destroys the city of San Francisco. By doing so, Russia wants to force the United States into complete and unconditional surrender.

In response to the Russian attack, the United States sends its army to stop them before they destroy their next target, New York City. We play as Sam, an agent working for the US government and part of the United States Marine Corps unit sent to retake the station. Equipped with a state-of-the-art augmented reaction suit that gives him superhuman strength and speed, Sam must fend off enemy forces.

In terms of mechanics, Vanquish is a highly dynamic and eye-catching third-person shooter where gameplay is based on eliminating Russian military forces. While playing, we can interact with various objects, open doors, operate elevators and other mechanisms. Our hero can carry three guns, grenades and explosives.

The game's cover system comes in very handy when we enter combat. Walls, vehicles and other large objects can serve as natural cover, but some of them can be destroyed if they are under fire for too long. Additionally, the game utilizes the auto-regenerating health mechanic known from games like Call of Duty. When Sam takes heavy damage, the game's time is automatically slowed down, giving him a chance to eliminate his enemies or take cover, however briefly, to replenish his health points.

Vanquish had much worse graphics than the PC version of the game released in 2017 due to the limitations of seventh-generation consoles. Vanquish on PC has no limitations when it comes to visual effects, so it can be played at resolutions higher than 4K at 200 frames per second. This version also comes with Steam achievements and cards, the ability to save the game in the cloud, and all the DLC released on consoles. Vanquish offers an average of 8 hours of gameplay.
