Sonic 3D Blast is one of the most infuriating Sonic games on the Sega Genesis. Rather than going 2D, the game goes for an isometric "3D" view. While technically impressive that Traveller's Tales was able to work this on the Genesis/Mega Drive, the same can't be said with its gameplay

As I said earlier, the game goes for an isometric view, meaning we can control Sonic in all directions. I think the controls here need a little more tweaking because whatever colored checkered floor Sonic is running on, he feels so slippery to control leading to me losing my rings to stage hazards like 60% of my playthrough. The other 40% comes from the enemies. Since this is in an isometric view, it is hard for me to kill enemies while jumping, so my safest bet was to spin dash, but that leads to you bouncing all over the place if you're not careful. A remedy for this is the Gold Shield. Once obtained, Sonic can perform the Blast Attack, which technically speaking, is the first game in the series to have the homing attack predating Sonic Adventure, and it is fun to use, making it an easier solution to defeat the robots

And get this, if you get hit by a stage hazard or an enemy, not only will you lose your rings, but you will lose all of the Flickies you save and try to escort, meaning you have to collect all of the ones that are scattered across the stage and hopefully don't get harmed again quickly while you're trying to do that. Also, you only get 1 continue. Use it up, and you're back to the beginning, and this was where I had to rely on save states and the rewind feature included in the Sega Genesis Classics compilation

Throughout the game, you'll encounter either Tails or Knuckles in each of the levels. Give them 50+ rings and you'll be sent to the special stage, and the stages themselves are piss easy, mostly. I just wanted to get all of the Chaos Emeralds and be done with 3D Blast. The stages to get the last Chaos Emerald was where I struggled a bit, so I just abused the rewind feature. I know that's cheating, but can you blame me? Anyway, I got all of the emeralds, defeated the true final boss, and I finally completed Sonic 3D Blast

The only major positive thing about this game is the music, but that's always what Sonic games are capable of. It's the familiar Sonic Genesis Soundfont we all know and love, so there's not much I can say here

Sonic 3D Blast, while impressive that "3D" was capable on Sega's 16-bit machine, in the late 16-bit era when game developers are incorporating 3D models into their games, completely falters in everything else. This is one of the most aggressively annoying Sonic games I've played, and I have no interest in coming back. If you do like this game, more power to you, I just can't stand it
