Mega Man: Dr. Wily's Revenge is the first attempt of bringing the beloved Blue Bomber into a handheld device. For what it is, it's impressive how they manage to cram in the sprites and the gameplay feel into the Game Boy, and at no point where Mega Man feels sluggish to control

The game has eight Robot Masters split into four, with the first half taken from the first game, featuring Cut Man, Ice Man, Fire Man, and Elec Man, while the second half is taken from Mega Man 2 with Bubble Man, Quick Man, Flash Man, and Heat Man which can only be found inside Wily Castle. Despite the tiny screen, they all play almost similar to how they were designed in the NES games. Alongside the Robot Masters comes a new creation called Enker, a new Robot Master under the name of a Mega Man Killer, which is self-explanatory to understand. I recently found out that he recurs in a few games with his recent one being Mega Man 10, being featured as a boss in one of the extra stages; pretty neat

The first half of the game isn't all too bad, containing levels with a little bit of a challenge in classic Mega Man fashion, but the second half is an entirely different story. This version of Wily Castle has two levels, but let me tell you, these things are like a freaking gauntlet. These levels go on for way too long and they have some cheap death traps and enemy placements littered around. I couldn't do these levels without using save states, as getting a game over sends you back to the beginning of the level

There is a new weapon called the Mirror Buster after defeating Enker, which is only useful for the second form of the Wily boss, which is kind of lame honestly

Overall, Mega Man: Dr. Wily's Revenge is a neat little adventure for those who are curious about Mega Man's history on the Game Boy. It isn't something I want to go back to, but I'm glad I got to experience his handheld origins, and I'm impressed with how Minakuchi Engineering was able to work this on less powerful hardware. I'm interested in checking out the rest of his adventures on the Game Boy and see how they improve over the first entry
