If you could properly play, it would be pretty fun. It used to be. However, they've recently gone super hard into monetizing the game, and it most certainly is not worth what they want.
That is indeed frustrating but afaik it happens because of Google rising dramatically the fee for the rights of using their maps, which forced Geoguessr to find an alternative. I strongly disagree with the last part though, the mensality is low and offers lots of nice features.
