Played it with a couple of buddies. I will say with confidence that one is the main reasons I like this game as much as I do is because of the Sapphic relationship. Some elements are lacking, which complicates my opinion. As a gay loser, stories with genuine relationships like these are hard to come by. God bless the people on the internet for making cute fanart of these two... love their vibe!!!!!

Story is also twisty and unexpected. Some of the scenes are strong and captivating emotionally, such as saving Kate and the final dream sequence in the last episode. IMO I think that dream sequence was totally ripped from Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, which gives this game more points in my eyes. I'll provide you with a quick pros and cons list to further explain my complicated thoughts...

Pros:
- Cute, gay relationship with cute goth gf.
- Relatable main character.
- I'd argue the rewind gameplay is fun. Had a goofy puzzle or two in there that had my friends hollering.
- Decisions FEEL like they matter (but they don't, see cons).
- Movie game well-paced with characters that you want to see succeed.
- Sudden genre/tonal shift in the third act that keeps you engaged.

Cons:
- Ending is a binary decision! There's only two endings really. All those dang decisions for nothing. What were they thinking?? I don't need every movie game to be Detroit: Become Human, but you should at least get an ending based on how you played the game.
- Dialogue is really cringy; sometimes just plain bad. Max's internal monologue is way too clowny for some scenes. EDIT: Taking this one back, the dialogue keeps it real. Max is just a funny little guy with very quotable lines. Don't even get me started on Chloe's cringe dialogue-- love.
- Journal entries are useless-- they're just recaps of what happened. I'm playing, I know what happened. EDIT: Actually fuck this, the drawings surrounding the entries are fun and not just recaps. They give you more character development for Max and she does little jokes throughout them and draws on the pages. The sequel improves these journal entries further by giving the writing more personality and style, which again helps you feel closer to the main character.
- It's clear that 40 year old straight dudes wrote these gay teenage girls. EDIT: Okay, this one is also bad.

With all that being said, again, the game's a 4/5 because of homosexuality. If there were more gay games that were better, I would probably rate it lower. EDIT: There are more gay games now, and I still like it. We should probably move away from older men making games about lesbian teenage girls though.
