As a mechanical "spiritual successor" to the ps1 Spider-Man duology, Spider-Man: The Movie evolves the formula by bringing more variation in many aspects. A range of new combos and moves are combined with very agile and frantic gameplay, in levels with a great focus on verticality, sky battles and even stealth missions. All these aspects make you ignore how clunky the combat is and how stupidly difficult this game gets sometimes.
It's even possible to play with the green goblin, with unique mechanics including his glider, by beating the game in the maximum difficult (or using cheat codes, if you're a normal person).
It is amazing for someone who loves the Raimi trilogy seeing the same Peter portrayed by Tobey Maguire in a parallel adventure interacting with classic Spider-Man villains like Vulture and Shocker. Despite the fact that the movie's re-creation of the story is pretty bad and these villains are being thrown into the narrative just as fillers.
