Game & Watch Gallery Ranked

I’ve recently remembered just how addicting the Game & Watch Gallery games are. I found out that backloggd has every modern remake as its own entry, so I thought it would be interesting to rank them all!

Egg
Egg
The absolute most addictive, at least to me. While the classic version is essentially a retread of Manhole, the modern rendition ups the ante to incredible levels.

1

Donkey Kong Jr.
Donkey Kong Jr.
The Classic version of DK Jr was my first classic Game & Watch game and probably my favourite period. The modern version is also fantastic; adding two new levels to the fray!

2

Chef
Chef
Classic Chef is already deliciously addictive, and Modern Chef maintains the flavour and adds much more complexity to the dish.

3

Mario Bros.
Mario Bros.
Growing up, this was my favourite in the entire series. By now, I've mastered it to the point that I managed to reach over 2000 points, which I haven't been able to do for any other G&W game.

4

Helmet
Helmet
Probably the best example of risk/reward. Collecting the coins make Mario move slower but also increase the point bonus. It's enough to turn what I'd consider a fairly weak classic G&W game into an amazing one.

5

Vermin
Vermin
Rather than having lives, the game ends when one of the six eggs break. I love the extra tension it provides.

6

Fire Attack
Fire Attack
4 has a mixed bag of new games, but Fire Attack is definitely the star of the show. It does take a while to unlock, but it's absolutely worth the effort.

7

Turtle Bridge
Turtle Bridge
Plays similarly to helmet, but also rewards the player for maintaining a streak. But you know what I really love about Turtle Bridge? The music. Chef's kiss.

8

Parachute
Parachute
Similar to Fire but even more engaging to me. Faster paced, too!

9

Fire
Fire
Is it the most derivative of the G&W Gallery 1 lineup? Yes. Would I still consider it the best? Absofruitly.

10

Manhole
Manhole
How many times has Manhole been recreated? Because I'm pretty sure it's been remade more than any other G&W game (besides Ball ofc). I'd argue Manhole walked so Egg could run.

11

Donkey Kong 3
Donkey Kong 3
One of the most interesting G&W games, but also one of the most inaccessible. It took a long time for me to truly appreciate, so I have trouble recommending it.

12

Greenhouse
Greenhouse
I prefer the classic version for offering way more scoring opportunities, but that doesn't make the modern rendition irrelevant. Burning down everything with the fire power-up is so much fun.

13

Octopus
Octopus
The first case of risk/reward in G&W gallery, and a fairly decent one at that. Being able to throw the treasure is a huge game changer.

14

Donkey Kong
Donkey Kong
I'm not as into Donkey Kong G&W as much as most people are. I find it a bit clunky and the different levels added to the modern version honestly don't change enough. It's fun, but far from my favourite.

15

Rain Shower
Rain Shower
Rain Shower would probably be higher if it wasn't sooooo slow. Once it gets going though, it becomes a challenging exercise.

16

Mario's Cement Factory
Mario's Cement Factory
Moves at a snail's pace, and fails to pick up much. The modern version letting Mario land on the elevators from any height is appreciated, though.

17

Oil Panic
Oil Panic
While this is probably the best translation of a dual screen G&W game, I still find Oil Panic fairly dull.

18

Ball
Ball
I already don’t care much for classic Ball, but modern Ball frustrates the hell out of me. And did we really need four versions???

19

Boxing
Boxing
Have you ever played Urban Champion? Well, you've also played Game & Watch Boxing.
