Like I said in my Ape Escape review, this version was actually the first one I experienced, and while the conversion is not perfect, I think it is a perfectly fine way to play the original game.

In some aspects, I actually prefer it over the PS1 original, as I'd rather mash the button corresponding to the gadget I want to use, rather than rotate the stick.

With this one, I played with the British English dub, and I think it was fine. Nothing amazing, but it does the job.

If you're curious about playing Ape Escape, and you don't have access to the original version, I think you can't go wrong with this one, in spite of the limitations.

Do you mind explaining the control difference further?

Since it has been a couple of years since I played the PSP version, details may be a bit rusty, but I'll try my best to explain the differences:
- Since the PSP doesn't have a second stick, nor a second set or L and R buttons, controls got changed a lot. For example, like I mentioned earlier, any gadget that needed to use the right stick, had to be changed. In this case of the Super Hoop and Sky Flyer, instead of rotating the right stick to use them, you now mash the corresponding button for that to happen. So, for example, if you mapped the Sky Flyer to the O button, you mash that button.
- Additionally, because of the lost of a second set of shoulder buttons, instead of jumping with the R1 Button, you jump now with the X button, like many other platformers. This means that, unlike the original PS1 release, where you could use the 4 face buttons for gadgets, you can now only use 3. Not a big difference, in my opinion.

Those are the main differences that I'm remembering at the moment. I don't remember if the D-Pad still controls the camera in the PSP version or not, for example.
The L1 button served to center the camera in the PS1 original, and the L2 button made you go first-person. Don't remember how that was in the PSP version, either.

Jeez man, didn't expect such an in-depth breakdown from you. Thanks a lot for doing that, I really appreciate it - it definitely seems like the original console version was a bit more gimmicky, whereas the PSP goes for a more traditional platformer set-up.

These games were a huge part of my childhood. Glad they're available on the PS store as I'd love to relive them at some point. Good review.
