The Larks' Tongues in Aspic of Gaming

System Shock, arguably one of the best first-person shooters from the 90s, and that is saying a lot, and the most Avant-Garde game ever!

For those who don't know, Larks' Tongues in Aspic is one of the most iconic King Crimson albums, for kicking off not only genres like Math Rock/Post-Rock, but also the Avant-Prog era from the band, with songs like both of the title tracks having an utterly bizarre percussion by Jamie Muir and guitar riffs by the one and only Robert Fripp, whose riffs rival that of Black Sabbath, while other songs are less chaotic but still very experimental like Exiles.

System Shock is the equivalent of that, the clunky and bloated controls, the grating soundtrack, weird visuals that only get more and more bizarre as the game goes on, an utterly evil place dominated by one of the first and greatest video game antagonists ever, the one and only SHODAN, while at same time introducing gameplay elements that would be seen later within the survival horror and tactical shooter genres, alongside the audio logs, that would become an central aspect from the sequel and Bioshock.
