I played this game in fricking 2023... which is to say I am very late to the party. The game is fun as hell though and still has a decent amount of lobbies out there.
It is a miracle that Valve is still somehow supporting the server for CS:S. And it's thanks to them that a late-comer like me can actually get to experience playing a game from back in the day. I haven't played CS 1.6 but will give it a shot when the time feels right.
It is definitely a bit weird to see all the guns being given weird fictional names instead of their actual names. But who fucking cares they basically function the same anyways. Playing with bots is actually more fun than I imagined. Some of the bots are actually surprisingly good (or I am just hopelessly bad at the game lol). If you want to get a feel of CS used to feel like, one of those bot matches would be a great starting point.
Playing with online server is fun too. I have actually not seen a proper bomb defusal server yet. It's basically all giant death match servers. I am extremely surprised though as I have never even once ran into a hacker. Maybe they all moved on to play CS2 or something lol.
This game serves as a really good time capsule (also a great resource pack for Gmod). So definitely give it a shot if you are curious what CS used to be about.
