My first Platinum since Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. Shout out to Insomniac for having a gentle Platinum trophy in their games that encourages exploring its content without asking too much of you. Also shout out to Insomniac for making an excellent video game you can experience the entirety of in under 30 hours. My adult ass needs more games like this.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is a huge improvement over the first two. Its story ups the emotional weight and villain quality, and I feel it excels at taking a pretty standard story and zooming in on the characters such that I was really invested in it all. Two spider-men allow for more story and game design opportunities than you’d think, all assisted by a GTA V character swapping system JACKED UP by the PS5 SSD. This is the coolest fast traveling I’ve seen in a game. It feels like damn magic how fast you load in. All that and the city looks incredible.
The well-paced side content is dramatically improved as well and overall mission design got a HUGE boost. Some really great stuff to see here.
Combat will be YMMV. It feels partially optimized and partially overburdened with moves that are hard to remember. Boss fights are fun but a bit drawn out. They’re also all loaded into the back half of the game so the pacing can be a bit weird.
My other little issue is that Miles, likable as he is, has side content that (respectfully) feels like it was written by a boardroom at Disney. Sterile and highly sanded down to the point where it lacks most edge/emotional weight/vitality. I hope that if they give him a bigger role going forward, they focus more on the interpersonal/internal stuff Peter’s content and aspects of Miles’s main story had.
All that is small potatoes and I’d still give this 5 stars if I didn’t have to reload checkpoints a dozen times for mission bugs. The last non-completion trophy I needed for the platinum took three times as long because the random crimes I needed kept disappearing before I got to them. Tons of crap like that, and it’s frustrating because this is otherwise one of the better superhero games ever made, I think. Game needed a couple more months in the oven.
But yeah, great overall.
