Cuphead is weird. It is, without a doubt, the most artistically impressive video game ever made as of this moment.

As a game, it is “merely” great. Very good run and gun style gameplay and a generous amount of content. It is high quality and lovingly crafted, but the bosses (mechanically) don’t quite reach the heights of other pattern recognition greats like Sekiro and Hollow Knight.

Delicious Last Course (DLC) is more of this, to an extent. Early on, I was getting vibes similar to the Shovel Knight DLC where it was stretching something small and brilliant into a big dilluted version of itself.

It gets out of this on three things. One, the bosses (especially the latter) are a visual feast even by the standards of original Cuphead. Two, the parry focused minibosses are extremely fun and add new diversification to the Cuphead game. Three, Miss Chalice is a lot of fun between her double jump and parry dash. The extra bit of health is very much appreciated because I wasnt about to relearn Cuphead 5 years later. A little con: It took pretty much the length of the DLC (5-6 hours) to kind of learn how to utilize her, and the invincible roll feels awkward to use on my controller.

Also in this game’s favor is that it is an absurdly great deal for $8. A half dozen good to great bosses, new equips/weapons, and a ton of side content. Also, this DLC, like the main game, is so damn earnest.

There’s love put into this game and you feel it. Despite the gameplay wearing on me, this is a great little package and I highly recommend it.
