I really want to like this game, but I just, find myself so lukewarm about it. Sometimes it feels a little too frustrating, with so many rooms of tons of enemies or frustrating bosses that feel more like a chore than anything else. But then sometimes there's some great setpieces and the bosses are really fun and feel well-designed to the degree of Luigi's Mansion and I get pulled right back in.

I think this is a beautiful game, easily one of the best on the Switch in my opinion, even with it being a 2019 game. The intro cutscene looks straight out of a nice animated movie, and even in game it looks fantastic.

And I will give credit, the latter half of the game has some really fun bosses! The shark, the pharaoh, and even the final boss itself are a joy, it just felt like most of the ones that felt the best to me were littered all in the back half after lots of frustrating sequences (don't even get me started on Polterkitty).

I DO love the setup though, a hotel where each floor can take on a different theme is an absolutely incredible idea, and I really do love a lot of the themes they went with. Medieval Times ripoff, a museum, a movie studio, it's clear they got to go nuts in what they wanted to do and I have no doubt there were another dozen ideas that couldn't make it that were just as fun in concept.

I do like this game, but I don't LOVE it. The first Luigi's Mansion feels like such a perfectly focused experience, with a great hook (finding Mario), easy controls and using the vacuuming (which was/is a great mechanic), a few extra powers (the fire, ice, and water elements) to keep things a little fresh without going too overboard in the amount of things you could do, and plenty of personality with your bosses without too many rooms full of enemies in between you and the next portrait ghost to scoop up, and fun extra collectibles in money and secret gems hidden all around the mansion and the Boos, which were both required for progress and also were fun to find after.

The money and the Boos in particular didn't feel nearly as important in this one. I got maybe three Boos before saying "I'm good, actually" and the money totals were so low in this game compared to the original that it just didn't feel enticing to keep collecting. I ended the game with about 50k give or take a few thousand, and in the original you're getting up to 100 million! It just felt so tepid and like a step backwards.

I do like this game, and I'm glad I finally played and beat it, but while I can happily see myself going back to Luigi's Mansion for a couple hours of fun every few years, I don't know when I'll come back to this one, if at all.
