they made a new pokemon game after 25 years

I love it. It's actually good. It delivers on that fantasy I imagined two decades ago. Sure, I can put on a critical hat and tear this thing to shreds, but it being a lovely warm Pokemon experience does enough for me.

As of writing this review, I've finished the main story and likely will gradually complete the rest of the PokeDex over the coming months. The game seems to contain all the Pokemon you need to finish the Dex without needing to trade with other versions, or go to a Toys R Us event, which is REALLY appreciated. Again, 25 years for them finally to do this.

Think it's greatest success is pulling me into this world that doesn't like Pokemon. It's begging for a Pokemon-fan to teach it the way of compassion for pretend creatures. While the side quest objectives are often lame or tedious, their pay off is very gratifying. It's like when that friend finally watches that show you keep telling them about and they really like it, except with a fictional Japanese village.

I also love the references to previous games, all the hairstyles. One for the fans, y'know? Lots of bits like that. Doesn't make a game any better, it is just "thing I know". But I like the things I know.

Oh ok then, a few criticisms:
- Battle system is new, this is good. But it feels kinda borked and undercooked. Can see why they didn't focus on trainer battles too often. Considering team building and battling was always a big pull for me, did find the game lacking here.
- Game has some real muddy textures. Don't mind draw distance or framerates, but the logo on your clothes just looks like a messy blob. Not hot.
- The music is really good, but that damn encounter theme cuts them off way too often. "Oh hey, this is a really cool track, really loving how its bringing back motifs from those Gen 4 games aaaaand a Paras saw me.
- Story got a few too many text boxes, do feel I'm being promoted characters to like and buy trading cards of. Looking at you Irida. Don't mind the actual story itself though, think it does some legwork to make Gen 4's goofy plotline a little better.

Final thoughts: Kleavor owns.
