Tetris 99 is one of the few anomalies within my Switch library where I am somehow always drawn back to it. It's been years now, but I've been there for every special weekend event, so that I could have all of the skins. It's not some "completionist" thing (though it's a nice plus to have everything on the customize screen), it's just a genuinely fun iteration of Tetris that I'm always looking for excuses to play.

These days, we do have the robust and faithful Tetris Effect on the Switch, and while I love everything about Tetris Effect and the freshness it brought to the genre with its little tweaks... there's something about the quick matches and the simplicity of 99 that draws me into it more often than Connected has, now that I've rolled the credits a few times over in that.

But 99 doesn't just stop at being a very good competitive version of Tetris - You can upgrade for a measly price to get the beloved Marathon mode in there along with some other single player modes. It makes it a really impressive package, honestly.

Now I might not be the best player (I have two wins under my belt at the time of writing), and I might only play for a few sessions at a time every few months, but that doesn't change the fact that I have almost 50 hours logged in this tidy little package that I'm always happy to return to.

The only critique I could ever have - I wish there was a mode, still 99 players, but I wish there was a way to get paired with people at your skill level. It seems all to often you get in lobbies with Tetris gods... and while that doesn't ruin the experience per say, knowing I'm probably going to lose isn't the best mindset to have when jumping into a videogame hah.

All in all, if you have Nintendo Online, and you've dabbled in playing Tetris, this is one game that you really should not pass up. It's always fun, and the seasonal/special events make it just that much easier to jump into every time they come around. NameBrand.
