If you love party games like Jackbox, I consider this a must play! It's such a simple game loop, but it executes it perfectly. Definitely putting this in my party game rotation! NameBrand
I've had a lot of fun playing this game! I'm no stranger to the Jackbox formula, it's become a yearly tradition at this point. So when I saw this, and its premise, I thought it might be a great addition to that lineup. And, I think it is!
The concept is pretty straight forward: add your own spice to a b-movie scene at a predetermined time. You could make a funny comment, or impersonate the actor/actress in what they might say next. You could do just a bunch of sound effects. Whatever you think will win your group over to vote for your "Riff", so you can earn the most points and win the game.
While playing I found the "Riff" system to be pretty complex, and I think it allows for a lot of creativity! While your Riffs are always read by an AI through text to speech, you can change the pitch, and you can "give it an accent" by changing what language the AI reads the text in. You can also at any point in your Riff, add sound effects So many combinations! It's fun to mess with and come up with creative Riffs in the attempt to make your group laugh.
While you can be really creative during rounds, you can also tailor the game rules to your hearts content. When I was playing with some older folks, I gave them more time to type out their responses from the default. You can change how many rounds there are, if a bot joins the round, how smart said bot is during a round, etc. You can really tailor make the game to fit your needs.
I think my only critique is that it is only the one game mode, doing the same thing every round. It's a good enough formula that it's perfectly fine to be this way. But I think about something like Quiplash from Jackbox, and how their final round is a bit unique. I would have liked to see some flair each round... maybe you're restricted to choosing a few words from a word pool, or, you have to use a specific sound effect, or something similar. I think "guided" rounds like that would spruce up the gameplay even more and would help it be even more replayable, even though it's a small thing.
All in all I really like this game and I'm excited to play it with more groups of people, and throw it in my rotation of party games.
Also to note: it works almost flawlessly on SteamDeck! Just had a couple of weird playback issues where some clips wouldn't play right (were skewed on the diagonal and had weird green lines). But even then, was only a few clips and when it happened the game progressed normally through the rounds otherwise.
