Village sees the disparate styles, themes, and plot beats of the Resident Evil series coalesce into one satisfying whole, albeit in a very stupid way. It's a nightmarish descent into campy schlock, one which I expect appealed more to fans of the series in its totality rather than those who wanted a follow-up to 7 biohazard specifically.

This is a great and campy game, but I think it could have hit greater highs than this. The titular village was cool, with secrets and optional areas to find, and I think a prospective Resident Evil 9 ought to expand this concept and open up progression; the main objectives in Village must be completed in a particular order, but they didn't necessarily have to be. Make the game a massive puzzle box, deepen the level-design beyond the scope of the area the player is currently in... there are so many ways to heighten the complexity and substance of this series, to go beyond what is here a straightforward experience. Village dipped its toes into promising new waters. Can we take the plunge?
