Now this is more like it! Wow, talk about an improvement!
It's obviously not uncommon for franchises to get better with each installment, but the fourth Sniper Elite in particular feels streets ahead of the previous ones. Not just in terms of the flow of gameplay but also the huge upgrades to level design.
It seems that this time around, Rebellion finally decided to fully embrace the wide-linear levels that many had been clamoring for. With open-ended objectives, you can tackle your mission in any order and from any angle, using many different methods to complete each goal. With this approach, it truly feels like a culmination of what the series could be as it built up to this.
With the formula they've built for themselves here, I can easily see this series going up against IOI's Hitman games, which were a clear inspiration for this game regardless, as it offers the same kind of creative freedom and satisfaction that those games allow players.
Outside of this, perhaps the most notable improvement for me was just how smooth and enjoyable the traversal felt. You can now climb and leap freely without being limited to designated areas, as you were in prior games.
Basically everything in SE4 feels tighter than it ever has, apart from the overarching narrative carrying you between levels. It's certainly the best so far, but that really isn't saying much.
With how much Rebellion has nailed this one, I wouldn't be surprised or saddened if the next and most recent entry is merely an incremental upgrade rather than as drastic an overhaul as this was.
