As recent beatemup revivals go TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge is far more my speed than Streets of Rage 4 was. Shredder’s Revenge feels like a modern sequel to the SNES Turtles in Time in all the right ways. The mechanics are nicely fleshed out to have a good balance of depth and simplicity and the game is fast paced and with a focus on dodging instead of parrying which I appreciate. As beatemups go the campaign is rather meaty with 15 levels with strong aesthetic variety, a bunch of unique bosses, and bringing back a lot of the classic Turtles in Times enemies with fresh coats of paint and some new ones as well. The game also does a fantastic job capturing the aesthetic and vibe of the original TMNT cartoon and the old game adaptions like Turtles in Time. The game is filled to the brim with characters and references to the old cartoon but it doesn’t do so cynically, there’s definite love and care there, and even if you have zero nostalgia for the original cartoon the game just nails feeling like you’re playing through an 80’s cartoon. The soundtrack is pretty rad too. I just beat the story mode as Donnie but I’ll definitely have to play through this game again with friends, which this game lets you play with up to six people. Shredder’s Revenge is overall a great modernization of a classic beatemup series and is just a real fun time all around.
