I love card games when they're compelling and satisfying enough
I love pokemon and almost any derivative involving critters

unfortunately, this couldn't hold my attention.

Gameplay feels fine, but doesn't feature any mechanics that really feel too unique or interesting. Battles in the first hour and a half or so that I played were fun, and I like that it doesn't really gate you out of progress for losing battles, only select story ones. They just were the same out of the 12 or so I played.

No real narrative hook to me. You're a kid, you just arrived at this school, made a ton of friends instantly, but then got fucked over in a battle and get the game banned. Some weirdness arises, and people deal with the aftermath. Sure, I'm sure they go somewhere with it, but there so far wasn't anything that kept me invested. The art style is also unique, but not up my alley. For creatures or the characters.

It feels nostalgia baity but like... weirdly unmotivated to attempt the nostalgiabait that you typically expect from this sort of thing. Not that it's being smart with the way it tries, but that it just doesn't really try too much. Kind of a plus, but it doesn't strike a positive or negative chord with me. It's more going for nostalgia towards childhood itself than anything in particular.

The actual dialogue is decently well written, but again, just not interesting enough to grab me. I would liken it all to costume quest, but doesn't show its hand(pun not intended) enough to make me want to see what comes next.
