I have played through Dark Souls dozens of times on different platforms; it is one of my top 5 favorite games of all time. I must say that it is an experience that can only be conveyed through video games—not books, not theater, not movies. Dark Souls offers a truly game-centric experience, much like other titles in FromSoftware's catalog.

Dark Souls is a deeply personal experience, one where the player and the controller must establish a connection through trial, error, and curiosity to decipher the world that Hidetaka Miyazaki and From Software team have created. The direction of this game in every aspect is fascinating to me: gameplay, music, artistic style, sound, and lore. The atmosphere that this game emanates feels mystical.

Without a doubt, Dark Souls is a cornerstone of modern video games, marking a before-and-after moment. However, people realized this a bit late, only after it had changed them as players. After 10 years, we are still talking about and referencing Dark Souls in almost every discussion.

After playing Dark Souls, you probably no longer want games to be so 'gamey'; you seek experiences that are truly worthwhile. If not, they will bore you.

Dark Souls may not be the first Souls game, and perhaps it is not even the best Souls game, but to me, Dark Souls is special because it showed me what video games can achieve when you seriously consider them as a medium. FromSoftware, though they were not aware, changed the industry with this game.
