Database narrative as moe personification. Impressive atmosphere and structural sensibilities, but the game's voyeuristic treatment of Lain is deeply suspect, especially given that this has one of the cruelest endings I've seen in basically anything. Doesn't help that whoever designed the UI is a psychopath.

The anime is obviously not much fun either but at the very least it closes on a bittersweet note. This is just a bummer all the way down.
Oh yeah the ending is nuts. I know Lain leads a pretty gloomy life and all but the ending just seemed like really pointless shock value.
Yeah, it's already one thing to create and dig around in a vulnerable child's psyche for Content. Throwing the toy in the trash afterwards feels resentful.

I legit had no words, and didn't breathe for a solid 30 seconds. The most shocking thing that could have been portrayed, and portrayed poorly.
