also on naoto specifically:
i don't really care if any particular person sees him as trans, the problem of the character is for the most part not on the level of interpretation but on the level of what exists within the text of the game. the problem with how the game portrays him isn't that it uses the "woman disguises self as a man to 'gain' something." the problem is that 1. the game DOES use the appearance of transness because it is very clearly implied that naoto is talking about srs w/r/t the surgery in his dungeon (so his shadow, something that is supposed to represent repressed desires, has the desire to get srs which is y'know something that is pretty obviously a signifier of being trans). so the game tries to suggest that naoto is wrong about his desire to be a man, and he should accept that he's a girl who doesn't need to be a man to be taken seriously as a detective. so, 2. the reason the game thinks its "necessary" for naoto to accept this is because, with its self-righteous idea of "truth" that just means accepting every current hegemonic social assumption, the game thinks the idea of being trans is a denial of this so-called "truth." its near explicitly said that "a woman could never become a man!!!!" throughout naoto's arc. the language of transness is never used, but it should be pretty obvious that such a belief is a transphobic one. the game thinks its necessary that naoto accepts he is a woman because the game thinks that being trans is wrong.
this worst part of all of this is how it has given ignorant people a place to speak over trans people about transness, because thats what the game itself does and thinks it is correct in doing so.
